This major port city on the west coast of India by the Arabian Sea, is part of the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala. Kochi is often called by the name Ernakulam, which refers to the mainland part of the city and a Portuguese outpost. In 1663, the Dutch became the new rulers of the Malabar Coast and Cochin became the headquarters and residence of the Commander of the East India Company. This map illustrates that conquest.
